While working on a medical mission in Central
America, members of the Cascade Medical Team became greatly
concerned by the large numbers of patients with serious
burns resulting from open cooking fires inside houses. The
team also saw eye and respiratory infections exacerbated by
cooking smoke. These health concerns led to the development
of a stove. In addition, Central America has a growing
problem of deforestation, and unsustainable fuelwood use
contributes to this.
A member of the team, Nancy Hughes, made it her
mission to bring stoves to the people of Central America.
In memory of her late husband, a physician in Eugene,
Oregon, Nancy created StoveTeam International, which
operates in cooperation with The Southtowne Rotary
Foundation, a 501(C)(3) organization. All donations are
