Response to the News that Peace Corps is pulling out of Honduras

Nancy Sanford Hughes - Thursday, December 22, 2011

Many of you have heard the news today that the Peace Corps is pulling out of Honduras due to the drug trade that has been such a problem.  If the users of illegal drugs would stop their consumption it would certainly have a beneficial impact in areas such as Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Mexico, which are all areas where we work.

I have spoken this morning to our colleagues in Honduras and they have given me a considered response which I have paraphrased below.

As far as the Peace Corps reaction to the drug violence, this is a country wide concern that the Peace Corps has been dealing with for a long time..not just now. You also know, and Kyla, the Peace Corps Volunteer in Copan Ruinas will attest, that Copan is ok....the planes you saw when you were there on our recent mission were training planes for tourism which will begin to move people from Roatan to Copan the first of the year!!!  The residents of Copan are thrilled...

We as volunteers can witness and attest even better that as to Copan...nothing has changed...on the contrary, our contacts there feel the town has now a feeling of calmer spirits and less overt stress...and are looking forward to a full holiday season of visitors and business for the winter months..

World travel is always fascinating, but even if one travels on the freeways in the United States one has to assume some element of risk.  Thanks to all of us who are making choices to help, the world will be a better and safer place for everyone.

 Happy Holidays!

Nancy
